My Background and How I Work
I am Maria Boncyk, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing psychotherapy virtually with teens and adults across New York and Massachusetts. I hold my LCSW in New York, license number 087032, through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions, and my LICSW in Massachusetts, license number 1140891, through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Social Workers. I earned my Master of Social Work from the NYU Silver School of Social Work in 2012, and over the fifteen-plus years since, my clinical work has taken me from an Assertive Community Treatment team in rural Virginia to The Jewish Board and Cityblock Health in New York City, and into the private practice I have run since 2021. That range matters more than it might sound.
Working with people in acute crisis, in community mental health, and in value-based care taught me how anxiety, depression, and trauma actually show up in real lives, under real pressure, long before someone has the language to name what is happening to them. I specialize in complex trauma, anxiety, depression, people pleasing, and relationship difficulties, and I completed EMDR Basic Training in 2021, Intermediate Training in 2022, and Relational EMDR training in 2026, a modality I continue to train in because it produces the kind of deep processing that talk alone often cannot reach. Alongside EMDR, my work integrates attachment theory, relational and psychodynamic approaches, and somatic awareness, which helps clients notice what their body already knows before their mind has caught up. My clinical philosophy starts from a simple position: you are the expert in your own life.
I bring training and experience, but therapy works when it is a genuine partnership, so I am warm, open, and direct with the people I work with. I will help you see the patterns that are not serving you, and I will do it without shame or judgment, because most of those patterns began as intelligent ways to survive something difficult. I also hold a commitment that has become unusual in this field. I offer AI-free therapy.
I do not use AI note-takers, AI transcription tools, or any technology that risks storing or sharing what you say in session, because your sense of safety in this work depends on knowing exactly where your words go. When we begin working together, the first step is a free 25-minute consultation where we talk about what is bringing you in, cover the practical details like scheduling and insurance, and give you a feel for whether working with me is the right fit. If we move forward, sessions happen weekly for 50 minutes over a secure telehealth platform. Early sessions focus on understanding your history and what you want to change, and from there we shape the work around your goals, whether that involves EMDR processing, relational and attachment-focused work, or a combination that fits where you are.
The people I tend to work best with are teens, young adults, and adults who look capable from the outside, the ones holding jobs, friendships, and families together, while privately carrying anxiety that never switches off, a low mood that has outlasted every explanation, or relationship patterns that keep producing the same hurt in new packaging. Many of my clients have done therapy before and understood their patterns intellectually without feeling anything change, and that gap between insight and relief is exactly where the combination of EMDR, somatic work, and a genuinely relational approach earns its keep. I also bring particular experience supporting clients navigating identity, including LGBTQIA+ clients, people carrying the weight of immigration experiences, and the specific stress and anxiety that often accompany being non-white in spaces that were not built with you in mind. Beyond therapy, I provide clinical supervision to fellow therapists, drawing on more than five years of supervisory experience and integrating trauma-informed interventions, somatic awareness, object relations, attachment theory, and relational approaches, and I consult with businesses and organizations on quality clinical care, program development, and staff support.
If you have been carrying something heavy and wondering whether it is worth bringing to a professional, I would genuinely like to hear from you. Reaching out is free, unpressured, and often the hardest step, and you can take it whenever you are ready.
